Annual Meeting and Guest Speaker

Please save the date: Thursday, July 30 at the Houndstooth Saloon beginning at 6:00 PM CST for our Annual Summer meeting. During this time we’ll network with other Chicago area Alabama Alumni and Fans, learn about the upcoming events within the association and be joined by our annual guest speaker.  This year our special guest will be Chris Stewart of the Crimson Tide Sports Network.  A bit about Chris:

Chris Stewart is in his 21st year in broadcasting, and recently finished his seventh season as the University of Alabama’s men’s basketball play-by-play announcer for the Crimson Tide Sports Network.

In addition to his role as the voice of Crimson Tide Basketball, Stewart also serves as
radio pre and post-game show host, and TV play-by-play announcer for CTSN’s tape-delayed and pay-per-view coverage of Crimson Tide Football.

Stewart also is the radio play-by-play announcer for Bama Baseball.

Prior to taking over the Alabama basketball play-by-play job, the Fairfield native also spent eight seasons as the radio announcer for Birmingham-Southern College.  He described the action for two NAIA national championships won by the Panthers – the 1995 men’s basketball title, as well as the 2001 baseball championship.

Stewart has done additional work for CSS, ESPN Regional, and Fox Sports South.

On three occasions (2004, 2007, 2008) he has also named “Alabama Sportscaster of the Year” by the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association.

The third annual SEC Flag Football Tournament is happening Saturday August 22nd and here is the information for the SEC Alumni Groups. Alabama is hosting the SEC Flag Football Tournament this year and Laurel Stepp is the main contact to help with any questions or suggestions.

Here is information on the tournament:

Date: Saturday, August 22, 2009

Time: 10 am – 2 pm (but we will have a bar outing after the tournament details to be provided closer to the tournament)

Location: Diversey Fields – 141 W. Diversey Parkway (Diversey/Lake Shore Drive) This facility is an open field that is nestled between the Diversey driving range, the Diversey tennis courts, and Lake Shore Drive. It is on the west side of Lake Shore Drive . This facility features plush grass and plenty of open space. They run football and soccer on these fields in the fall. There is a paid lot right where you enter for the driving range.

Tournament: The SEC Flag Football Tournament will be using Players Sports Group again this year for referring and getting the fields set up.

Here are the basics on our tournament:

Player Sports Group uses 2 twenty-minute halves. For the SEC tournament, Player Sports Group use a championship/consolation format where all teams are guaranteed 2 games with most teams playing more. More detailed information can be found at http://www.playerssports.net/football/rules.php

Number of players per team:

Each team will need to have a minimum of 8 players (5 men and 3 women). Teams must have a minimum of 6 players (2 being women) to begin a game). There is no minimum for men as long as there are 6 total players.  There is no limit to the number of players on your roster.
