Happy New Year, everyone! Welcome to the last Roll Tide Chicago email of 2010. In early 2011, we’ll continue keeping you updated on chapter goings on (for example, we’ll be giving away our first scholarship this spring), with about one email per month. We also welcome any suggestions on chapter activities you’d like to see in the “off season.” Send your suggestions to info@rolltidechicago.com.
Thank you to everyone who came out to the holiday happy hour on December 16. We had a decent crowd for a first-time event, and our raffle winners seemed very pleased with their various prizes. And again, a BIG thank you to everybody who purchased tickets this year and helped us raise $2,000 for our scholarship fund.
Today’s UA fun fact: Enrollment during the university’s first year was a mere 52 students. It had risen to only 652 students when George Denny became president in 1912. By the time he retired in 1936, however, the University had more than 5,000 students.
New Year’s Day
I am dating myself when I say this, but remember when January 1 was the best day in sports? Oh, well, it’s not that good anymore, but at least the Tide is playing in the month of January. Join us for a farewell to the 2010 season at the Houndstooth this Saturday (usual food and drink specials). Kick-off is at noon. We’ll be having one last round of “squares” to raise more money for our scholarship fund, and t-shirts will be on hand if you missed getting yours earlier this year.
I’m going to turn things over to Marc, who’s got a year-end special edition of Random Notes.
RTR,
Laura
Random Notes from Marc
Kind of a busy week in college football huh? So let me get this straight…5 guys from Ohio State sell their own stuff to make a little extra coin to buy their parents, girlfriends, whomever better x-mas presents and for this they are suspended for 5 games for next year? NEXT YEAR? Who cares about next year when most if not all these guys will be long gone to the NFL. Do you know why the NCAA is waiting until next year to suspend these guys? I’ll let the O’Jays explain it for you….http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCkLEo-DT1Q. I mean who does the NCAA think they are kidding with this stupid ruling? Who wants to pay money to see the Sugar Bowl let alone watch it with half of the OSU starting offense suspended. The NCAA making more and more dumb moves by the day. Do you know that Ohio State sells T Prior jerseys both game worn and with his name on it yet he seems none of the money yet he can’t sell his own stuff to make a few bucks? How in the world is this fair? How many Julio or Ingram jerseys are out there? I don’t blame these guys for trying to make some money. Are they dumb and foolish sure but how else are these guys going to earn a little extra scratch?   And yet Cam Newton is still free and clear…
Is ESPN onto something with their promotions for the three Big Ten/SEC bowl games on New Years Day? Does the rest of the country care about it as much as we do? Do you care about it as much as some people do? Laura is in the firm “I don’t root for the SEC just because it is the SEC camp” [Well, in the national championship game at least. -L] I am sort of on the fence. I will pull for the SEC against the Big Ten but otherwise, I don’t really care that much.
ESPN has done a lot of good things this year with 30 on 30 and their coverage of college football. But nothing is better than this:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nvyknw4VClE
Is there anything better than watching NFL football in the snow? I wouldn’t want to play in it or really sit at Soldier Field or Giants Stadium to watch it but I sure enjoy it on TV.
Are you like me, do you get a little smile on your face whenever it snows or is cold down south? I’m sure we all know friends/family etc. who are freaked out about the weather down there this past weekend and all I want to say is haha welcome to the club. Of course most of us choose to live in this mess so who is really the dummy in the conversation?
It must be cold out because I hardly ever talk about the NBA but is there a more fun Chicago athlete out there to watch play than Derek Rose? I love watching him push ball up the court and just go full steam into the basket.
Is it ok that I love the movie the Sound of Music and watch it every year that it is on? [Yes. My husband knows all the words to Grease. -L]
This week in things that I didn’t know until I became a dad: I love my sister very much (even though she went to UGA) but she has a dog which to her is equal to Maya. So every time we talk and she asks how Maya is doing and I tell her oh she is rolling over or making raspberry noises or eating something new I have to listen to her compare it with what her dog Sampras is doing. Ok I get it she loves her dog and doesn’t have any human kids yet but come on IT’s a DOG! At some point I am going to go Nick Saban on her. [I am guilty of this, too. But my dog is really cute and funny! -L]
Finally, in the spirit of Steve Martin and his “Christmas wishes” skit on Saturday Night Live, here are some wishes for the new year:
That Julio Jones, Mark Ingram, and Marcell Dareus decide that they REALLY like Dreamland and the Capstone and stick around for their senior year.
That F#1P McCarron is as good as all of you out there are clamoring for him to be
That Coach Saban and the rest of the coaching staff figure out how to score in the second half of games
That next year at this time we are talking about a return trip to the National title game or at the very least a BCS bowl game
That next year Alabama, Texas, Ohio State, Notre Dame and Boise State all go undefeated prompting the BCS to explode when Alabama and Ohio State meet for the national title.
That Anthony Grant is given enough time to turn around the mess our men’s basketball team has turned into.
That the Quack attack finds a way to slow down Cam Newton (Not going to happen but wishful thinking)
That people on YouTube find something better to do with their time (although this is pretty funny) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkQ1f85kiME.
That Bengals owner Mike Brown is smart enough to draft Cam Newton with whatever pick the Bengals end up with. Of course he won’t and the Bengals will continue to be the Bengals.
That whoever has enough money to spend $330,000 on a Michael Jackson glove that he wore on the Bad tour gives some of that money to me
That AMC keeps churning out shows as solid as Mad Men and The Walking Dead
That I can meet and sneak a quick kiss from Natalie Portman (shhh don’t tell Shana)
That my beloved Reds continue to improve in the NL Central, that the White Sox win the AL and that the Cubs continue to stink.
That we all remember the words of John Lennon that All You Need is Love, and to Give Peace a Chance.
I know I say this each week but I really will be at the Tooth on Saturday for the game so I hope to see you all there.

Marc
