4th & Goal

I don’t think we could have asked for a better opening game do you? I have to admit I was a little leery going in if the Tide could replace all of the guys that they lost to the NFL. I guess I should have had more faith in Coach Saban; because like all of you I watched men against boys for most of that game. The speed of the defense, the skill of the o-line and of course the debut of TJ Yeldon who seems to be the next in line for the Tide running backs; just an impressive display all around. I think my favorite part of the post-game was that the Tide played the entire second half without 3 of our best defensive players and never really missed a beat. Some other notes from the weekend that was:
  • With Boise State dropping out of the top 25 the Tide now has the longest active streak 63 weeks and counting. (It might even be longer!)
  • The Tide becomes just the 2nd team in the last 50 years to be ranked #1, 5 years in a row at some point in the season. Only the University from 86-92 had a longer such streak. Just a remarkable turnaround from the lost decade of DeBose, Fran and Shula.
  • How many teams do you think the Tide running backs would start for? I’m not just talking about the starters I honestly believe all 4 of the Tide running backs would start for about 90% of the teams in the country.
  • I can’t tell you how much non-SEC fans HATE the SEC-SEC chant. I was watching the game with two Ohio State friends of mine and when the cheer started in the 1st half I told them to listen. They don’t get it. Maybe if the Big (Little) Ten ever beat anyone good they could start their own chant.
  • I mentioned it a couple of weeks ago but it needs repeating. Penn State is going to be much worse off by not having the death penalty than if they had it. Losing to Ohio University at home is just the tip of the iceberg.
  • I give Texas A&M credit for putting up a billboard in Gainesville this week. We need some new smack talk in the SEC. Let’s just see how well they play now that they are with the Big Boys week in and week out.
  • Savannah State got beat 84-0 by Oklahoma State last week and this week plays Florida State. For their trouble they will make close to a million dollars combined. Do you think it is worth it? Their coach wasn’t on board for playing either school, he said that Mike Gundy called off the dogs because otherwise they would have lost by 100. And you only get a million bucks combined for these two games? Should have been a lot more.
  • The NFL starts this weekend. I can’t remember a season when the NFL has started and no one seems to care. Or is that just me?
  • This week in things I didn’t know until I was a Dad: I better start writing all of this stuff down with Maya because I’m going to be a dad for the 2nd time this Feb. (Congrats Marc & Shana from your Roll Tide Chicago Family!)  Nothing like having a baby in Chicago in the middle of the winter right? Great planning on our part.
See ya this weekend at the Tooth
RTR!
Marc
