Roll Tide, Chicago!

UA fun fact: The school’s fight song is “Yea Alabama,” written in 1926 by Lundy Sykes, then editor of the campus newspaper.  Sykes composed the song in response to a contest by the Rammer Jammer to create a fight song following Alabama’s first Rose Bowl victory. The song as it currently played by the Million Dollar Band during games (the form known to most people) is simply the chorus of the larger song. While the opening line of song is taken to be Yea Alabama, Crimson Tide! the correct opening line is Yea, Alabama! Drown ’em Tide!

If you did not already know its Homecoming Week at the University of Alabama, which includes things like the lawn decoration competition, the annual pep rally on the steps of the Gorgas Library, crowning of the Homecoming Queen, and the Homecoming paraded featuring Crimson Tide teams, Big Al, the Homecoming Court and many local bands led by the University’s own Million Dollar Band.  This year “Timeless Traditions” serves as the theme for Homecoming 2012.  This has been a year of champions with the Crimson Tide family winning four national titles, a timeless tradition of our own, Sarah Patterson, Patrick Murphy and Mic Potter will be the Grand Marshals of the years Homecoming Parade.  If you are heading to Tuscaloosa for Homecoming this weekend, be sure to bring us back some pictures of all the events so we can enjoy in some of Alabama’s “Timeless Traditions.”

Viewing Parties

4th & Goal

Don’t hate me if I jinx Alabama, but after last week I am officially on the If the Tide doesn’t make the title game this season is a lost season bandwagon. You have to understand this is a big leap for me. In life I am a glass half full type of guy, but with sports I’m usually pretty glass half empty; maybe growing up a Cincy sports fan will do that to you. Here is why I say this. Did you watch the rest of College football? Florida while playing great defense and special teams had 30 yards total offense in the first half, LSU again with a good but not great defense should have lost to Texas A&M (give Johnny football or whatever his name is time at A&M that kid is a player) K-State seems to be a very good team but they play in the Big 12 so I take all games with a grain of salt. Notre Dame will be lucky to lose by less than 14 this week at Oklahoma which just leaves Oregon. Oregon vs. the Tide would be a fun game but we’ll address that later. Bottom line while all these teams have either a good/great defense or offense none have the offense and the defense that the Tide have.

It needs to be said again, that we as a fan base can’t take for granite what we are seeing from Coach Saban and the boys. It was not that long ago that we had the same look on our faces as the Vols fans had on Saturday and we had a coach as clueless as Dooley on the sideline. I’m not sure where the flip was switched but it sure is nice to go from hoping to win (Vols fans) to expecting and knowing we are going to win (us). I beg all of you to enjoy this ride that the Tide is currently on; I know I need to start.

TJ and Amari Cooper continue to impress. Imagine how good those two are going to be in the next couple of years.

I’m willing to bet (no pun intended) that there has never been a game between two teams 7-0 when the spread is 24. I guess not much respect is being given to Miss. State what with the juggernaut schedule of Jacksonville State, Auburn, Troy, South Alabama, UK, Tenn and Mid. Ten. State.

Time for a new segment called inside the crazy college football numbers from the past weekend:

  • The Crimson Tide has converted 20 takeaways into 15 scores – all touchdowns.  Alabama has scored 11 touchdowns off of 13 interceptions.
  • After a 17-13 loss at Vanderbilt (3-4, 2-3 SEC) in which it gained just 212 total yards, Auburn has become the first team in the history of the AP Poll (since 1936) to go 1-6 two years after winning a national title. It’s also the Tigers’ worst start since 1952.
  • Alabama lost six players from last year’s defense to the NFL and ranks No. 1 in the nation in run defense, passing efficiency defense, scoring defense and total defense
  • Finally this is my favorite stat: Bama has not trailed at the end of a quarter since 2010. That is incredible.

Your weekly Auburn update: http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2012/10/scarbinsky_auburns_gene_chizik.html#incart_river

You all know how much I love poking fun at the Little Ten. Well, first of all if you are an OSU fan you must be both thrilled and sickened by what you are watching every week. Thrilled that your team keeps winning but sickened that your moronic athletic department didn’t have the wherewithal to slap themselves with a 1 year bowl ban from last year when they didn’t have a coach and half the team was suspended. So I hope OSU pulls an Auburn and goes 12-0 and has to sit at home and whine about what could have been. Also with their crazy last second win over Purdue on Saturday it made this guy very upset: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIQEOjkpxcc&feature=player_embedded

This week in things I didn’t know until I was a dad: We took Maya to the pumpkin patch over the weekend. You forget how much fun kids (and their parents) have at this type of thing. She didn’t know where to go first. To the pumpkins, to the hay ride, the petting zoo, the little train they had she was running almost in a circle. You know it’s a good day when by the time we got to the expressway she was already sleeping in her seat in the backseat. (For pictures friend me on Facebook)

I’ll be down in T-Town for the game this week so next week I’ll not only recap the game but also all of the other fun.

4th & Goal

Here is this week’s award winning installment:
I don’t know about any of you but when I saw AJ lying on the ground and not getting up I stopped breathing. After my beloved Reds choked away the series against the Giants I didn’t know if I could handle any more sports disappointments in one week. (As it turns out I did find out how, when the Bengals lost to the 0-5 hapless Browns on Sunday) So I’m glad that he was able to get up, put on a brace and return to the game. On Tuesday when reports started coming out that he had a tear and not just a bruise I once again got worried. But thanks to his Mom hopping on Twitter that story was put to bed. (Do the rest of you wonder what Coach Bryant would do if Joe Namath had access to Twitter and Facebook?) And for those that wonder Joe is on twitter and usually has some interesting points.
Last thing on AJ it must be nice to be the starting QB at Alabama:http://www.lostlettermen.com/alabamas-mccarron-signs-womans-chest/
The Tide got past their first on the road bump and now travel, to Knoxville to take on the hated Vols. I for one still dislike the Vols more than any other team in the SEC.  Maybe it’s the color, maybe it’s because when I was at Bama we never beat them but more than anything it’s that smug smile that Fat Phil use to wear on the sidelines. But oh how times have changed and oh how I love it. I’m fine with Bama winning by 60 this week. There are not enough points that Bama can win by that will make me happy. The only downside is that if the Vols continue to lose they will fire Coach Dooley. I guess some fans already want that to happen: http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/2012/fire-derek-dooley-rock/?fb_comment_id=fbc_482951535072879_87253762_482953595072673#f35e1570a1975d.
As has been a Chicago Houndstooth tradition the Vols game always falls over superfan Katy’s birthday. This year she turns the big 3-0. so when you see her Saturday night wish her a happy birthday and if history is an guide she might give you a hug for it.
By the way,am I the only one happy we don’t have any of these dumb traditions? Rolling Toomer Corner, painting a rock, touching a rock (like Clemson), bringing and ringing cow bells to a football game, going to In N’Out Burger after every win (ok that is a good one by Oregon State).  I’m happy that our uniforms stay the same and that our tradition is winning and for the most part winning with class. Which leads me to my next point, how many other coaches would have done this after one of their players Powerbombed a guy to the turf like we did this past weekend? http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/ncaaf-dr-saturday/saban-alabama-player-show-class-body-slam-send-181735753–ncaaf.html Well, done Coach Saban keep on keeping on.
You know how each of us for some reason has a favorite player that we root for even though they aren’t the flashiest guys or the biggest? I always loved Chad Goss when he played WR for the Tide back in the late 90’s. Former President, Laura has a thing for Barret Jones. http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/13/sports/ncaafootball/alabama-center-barrett-jones-adapts-on-offensive-line.html?pagewanted=2&_r=1&smid=fb-share&;.  When you’ve made the Times you know you’ve hit the big time, and who knew he could play the violin?  That is something I would like to see.
For the last few weeks I’ve been rooting against Notre Dame but count me on the band wagon. Let’s say by some Touchdown Jesus miracle they manage to beat Oklahoma and USC, but USC upsets Oregon who would you rather play in the BCS game if the Tide makes it? A Notre Dame team that while very good on defense couldn’t find the endzone with a map or Oregon. So Go Irish! An even better plot would be if all three teams go undefeated.
Am I the only one that thinks that when Coach Saban steps down that the Tide will just keep humming along? Maybe not to what we have seen in the last few years but also not the train wreck that is Texas, Miami and of course Auburn? Did you guys watch the Red River Shootout? I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a team not coming off probation or having a mass graduation play as poorly as Texas did. I would not want to a Longhorn fan at the moment.
As for our friends on the plains:
http://www.al.com/sports/index.ssf/2012/10/auburns_fall_from_mountaintop.html#incart_river As much as I want to see Coach C pumping gas or working at Chick-Fil-A, I sort of want him to stay because just like Coach Shula it looks like he is clueless as how to A) develop players B) win on the road C) win at home D) stop the fans from mounting a Fire Gene web site. The most amazing thing about watching what is going on down there is how the Tide is playing with guys just as young and if you believe the recruiting BS the Tigers are recruiting just as well. The big difference is that Saban and his staff know how to coach them better. I don’t think Ol Gene has a clue.
This week in things I didn’t know until I was a Dad: Last Thursday as the Reds were blowing a 2-0 lead in a best of 5 series by losing 3 straight at home for the first time all season I was a little down in the dumps to put it mildly. Since it was a day game people were walking over to my desk and saying I’m sorry and it’s ok blah, blah as if someone had died in my family. So, when I walked into my house and saw Maya smiling and running towards me with her arms open like she does most nights when I get home it made me realize that while sports are important and we should take them seriously they aren’t the only things that should matter. (And yes I’m 36 and still working on this.)
And last but not least, Things I forgot about when living with a crazy preggo woman: Shana only because she has to, asks me to take pictures of her once a week so we can send them to our parents and track her progress, aka growing belly. Now follow me on this. While she is ok with me taking the pictures she only wants them sent to our family. No posting on Facebook, no texting out to friends who don’t live in Chicago. She doesn’t want people to see her like this. Yet it’s not like she is a hermit. She works 4 days a week, we went out to dinner to the Girl and the Goat on Sunday night, and we are going on a date this Saturday. So if you see her on the streets of Chicago its ok but god forbid if my college buddies living in Atlanta want a picture of her. If you can figure this out you are smarter than me.

4th & Goal

So much for nothing important happening when Bama doesn’t play huh? What a wild night last Saturday was huh? From UGA taking it on the chin, the West Virginia going into Austin and beating the Longhorns, Florida State losing to a lousy North Carolina State team to the dreaded Fighting Irish continuing to win I can’t remember a more enjoyable night of football. And least we forget LSU, stinking up the joint in the swamp and Auburn getting embarrassed at home. My kind of football Saturday!  Now I think that Saban takes this past weekend and shoves it down the player’s throats.

As the Tide moves into the meat grinder part of their schedule I want to once again remind all of you that it is not easy to win on the road in the SEC or in college football in general. Everyone seems to think that the Tide is just going to roll through Mizzou, The Vols, Miss. State and now even LSU but I’m not so sure. Three road games out of 4 in the SEC that is a tough stretch my friends. I think the boys are up for the task but don’t be surprised if they struggle a little.

On the flip side of this can you imagine an SEC championship game between Bama and South Caorlina? The Ol’ Ball Coach vs. Saban. How amazing could that be?

I love Nick Saban he is my favorite coach or manager of any team I have ever rooted for but with this story it comes off as if he is whining: http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/2012/saban-doesnt-like-no-huddle-offenses/

On the flip side of the Tide our old friends from the plains that are having a bit of trouble this season. Check this stat. With Cam Newton, my good friend Gene was 14-0. Without Cam, the good news for us is that he is getting roughed up in the NFL, Chizik’s career record is: 21-33. This promoted the future gas station employee Chizik to say this after the loss to Arkansas on Saturday: http://mobile.al.com/advbirm/pm_31142/contentdetail.htm?contentguid=Xcre0Fa7 I’m not usually a person who kicks a team when they are down but for some reason I find great joy in watching Auburn struggle so much this year.

Maybe it’s because I am a Dad now and I couldn’t imagine being away from my family for so long but every time I see one of these video’s I get a little misty. Hats off to South Carolina for pulling this off, Watching the Mom and Daughter gets me every time.

As of this writing my beloved Reds are winning the series vs. the Giants 2 games to 1. I have no idea if the Reds are lucky enough to make the World Series how I will be able to function during that week. I honestly can’t sit still during the games now.  I move around the couch, I take off and put on my hat, I’m just a wreck. Thankfully, I’m not that bad with the Tide but watching baseball every night for 6 months and then the post season is really taking a toll on me. The question that needs to be asked is why I care so much about a dumb team. I wish I had the answer…

Finally, in things I didn’t know until I was a Dad: While Maya isn’t potty trained yet that day is coming. We bought the potty and she likes to sit on it and acts like she is going to the bathroom. So the other night I asked Shana when the time comes for Maya to actually go to the bathroom how do we clean it out? Going #1 is easy I would imagine I just dump it into the toilet and down it goes but #2 who is going to be cleaning that out? Maya is eating our type of food and let me tell you she can drop some stinkers. I might have to video my first time cleaning that out just to show you how gross it is going to be.

Oh and since I haven’t had one of these in a while, in things that I forgot what it was like to be married to a crazy pregnant lady.   I had this funny story from yesterday. We went and got our 20 week ultrasound (which went off without a hitch, everyone is doing well) but while we were in the office they had some info on all sorts of things one of which was if your husband has to get his sperm checked. Nothing wrong with that I’m sure many men have had to go through this if you have trouble getting pregnant. But what I loved about it was that when the men were finished they had to hand their uh “sample” to the tech whose name is Conrad. For some reason that just cracked me up:  A guy goes in does his thing and walks out and hands his cup to Conrad.
