Roll Tide, Chicago!

UA Fun Fact & Trivia:

What is “pomping” and where are these signs displayed?

The act of making elaborate and brightly colored signs with chicken wire and tissue paper for UAs Homecoming weekend on Sorority Row

“Homecoming is a much-loved tradition for our faculty and staff as well as students and alumni. This is a time for us as a community to have fun, to show our school spirit and to make wonderful memories. I encourage everyone to participate in the activities, to enjoy the week and, most of all, to cheer on our Crimson Tide.”

— Dr. Judy Bonner, President

Above is a picture of a previous years “pomping” Sorority Row does for Homecoming.  The theme for Homecoming 2013 is “Leaving a Crimson Legacy.”  I think we all can think of a way we are leaving or have left our own Crimson Legacy behind on UA campus or here in the Chicagoland area.  As the picture below from the Paint the Town Red campaign on the Strip and in Downtown Tuscaloosa Crimson is what binds us all!  Let’s always remember that.

Viewing Parties

Both of our locations will be airing Alabama vs. Georgia State Saturday; kickoff is at 11:21 am.  Yes, it’s an early kickoff time, but I still hope to see a lot of you out for the game, because unless you get ESPN3 at home you won’t be able to watch the game!  Come share your Crimson Legacy with us this weekend at one of our viewing locations.  Also we are going to be holding some raffles this week at both viewing locations – so don’t miss out on some Bama prizes.

Houndstooth is opening at 9 am – they will have some special brunch items on the menu for the Crimson Tide’s early kickoff!

Roll Tide!

4th & Goal

Now that is more like it isn’t it? Two weeks ago I mentioned that no matter what else is going on in my sports world I can always count on the Tide to stay the course and deliver. That was never more the case this past week. The Bungles two weeks ago the talk of the town after their crazy win over the Packers get beat and beat badly in Cleveland. And my beloved Reds who just like the Tide I had such high hopes for after the 2nd week in Sept. lost their last 6 games of the season leading for all of one batter and getting crushed on Tuesday night by Pittsburgh to end there and mine playoff dreams. But what of the Tide you ask? Well they showed the rest of the SEC and the college football world that Alabama is still Alabama! (Well at least the 2nd half was) The first half was more of the same for the Tide. I think the word we are all looking for is bumbling: 3 fumbles numerous false starts 3rd and long on most plays and settling for field goals. Maybe it was Saban and Coach Smart at half time getting on the guys or maybe the light just went on but when TJ Yeldon took it to the house on the 2nd play of the 2nd half things seemed to open up.

I don’t often buy into all of the recruiting nonsense that is out there but I am starting to see the light on one very important aspect of recruiting. That is the depth that the Tide has over other teams. Case in point was Saturday when our starting Center Ryan Kelly got hurt and boom Chad Lindsay came in and not only didn’t miss a beat but the offense really started to hum with him at the helm. It was equally clear that true freshman Eddie Jackson is a keeper at CB. Jackson has an interesting back story and goes to show that if you can play Coach will find a spot for you on the team:

But not all is rosy in Tide land as once again Saban is dealing with knuckleheads who are not buying into the “process.”  Starting Safety Ha-Ha Clinton Dix was suspended on Tuesday for breaking team rules. now with how the schedule breaks over the next month this might not be the bad news it looks like at the moment. But if this is something series that keeps him out of the LSU game on Nov. 9th the Tide is in BIG BIG trouble. Just like with everything else that has happened with this team so far I can’t remember a group of Bama players getting into as much trouble as this group has and the season is only 5 weeks old. From the four morons who beat up the students to basically steal his lunch money; to DUI arrests from Gino Smith to now Ha-Ha I can’t imagine things are too sunny at the Capstone. Let’s hope that whatever it is that Ha-Ha did it’s nothing that a little running and extra school work can’t fix.

I’m sure by now that you have seen the news that Alabama canceled their home and home match up with Michigan State. I was very much looking forward to going to East Lancing in a couple of years and like most of you I always look forward to crushing a Big Ten team. The reason the Tide canceled the games has nothing to do with ducking a Big Ten team and everything to do with $$$$. With the SEC more than likely going to a 9 game schedule sooner rather than later the Tide doesn’t want to give up a home game when they are already going to play 5 road games. The difference between a home and home series and say the game in Atlanta next year vs. W. Virginia or Dallas in two years vs. Wisconsin is that the money the Tide makes offsets the fact that they lose a home game. With the SEC going to a 9 game schedule and it will happen (and thank god we get another conference game and not another game vs. Georgia State) the Tide doesn’t want to lose the money it would get for playing Michigan State on the road. It’s a shame and we all suffer for it but that is the life of college football right now.

Before we move onto the other news of the week I didn’t want to leave the Bama stuff on a sour note. So here is a great interview/story about AJ and his growth as a player:

The spread this week is 56 ½, I don’t think we need to say anything more about this game.

The lead story on Saturday night was not that Bama was back or that UGA beat LSU in a fantastic game. No the news of the night was that The Golden Boy Lane Kiffin was fired on the runway as USC landed after getting crushed by Arizona State. Kiffin to me is the A-Rod of College football. No one not even his own fans liked Kiffin, just like most Yankee fans are ready for A-Rod to go away. It’s a rare thing to be hated universally by sports fans but I honestly think most people myself included were happy to see this guy get the boot. USC named former Ole Miss Coach Ed Oregon as their interim coach and if it leads to more commercial spots like this count me on board: “Tell um JoJo”

It’s not often that I praise the Big Ten or Ohio State but this video is really amazing. A little back story the main sports caster in Columbus Don Tiberi lost his 21 year old daughter in a car crash a couple of weeks ago. She was a student at OSU and after the game vs. Wisconsin (his first game back) most of the players stopped by to hug him: It’s not much that we use the word “classy” and Urban Meyer in the same sentence but if he was the reason behind this well done.

You know how much I hate ugly uniforms and teams that change them for the sake of changing them. Did you see the banana uniforms that West Virginia sported on Saturday, woof are those bad

This week we have two songs the first of which comes from one of my favorite bands in the 70’s Little Feat: If you like live music you can do a lot worse than their album Waiting for Columbus

And the second song is a new take on an old classic that is heard at least twice a week in the Brafman household: If this doesn’t put a smile on your face you need help:

In this week’s installment of things I didn’t know until I was a Dad: I’m sure things will change as they get older but on Wed. night I witnessed so true older sister-brother love. I was in the kitchen getting Jacob his night time bottle and he started to fuss in his room. Before I could go in Maya was down on the floor next to him “reading” Good night Moon to him. It shut him right up and he sat there and listened as Maya showed him the pictures of a book that I read her every night for about 2 years. I will remember that scene when in 6 months they are battling it out like Dusty Rhodes and Ric Flair for the same toy.

Let’s hope no one gets hurt in this “game” on Saturday.
