Roll Tide, Chicago!

UA Fun Fact & Trivia:

Where did Tuscaloosa get its name?

The modern city name, “Tuscaloosa” was derived from the old name, “Tuskaloosa.” In the languages of the Creek and Choctaw Indians, “Tushka” means warrior and “lusa” means black.

It’s Tennessee Hate Week – yes it used to be the 3rd Saturday of October and now is usually the 4th Saturday, but it is one of my favorite weeks of the season.  Hope you have seen some of the jokes and things we have been posting on our Facebook page this week.  If you are not a part of the Roll Tide Chicago Facebook page please join us here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/70751310545/

My favorite joke of the week has been:

What does UT & a sandcastle have in common?

They both look good till the Tide comes in!

4th & Goal “I’m Going to the Game Addition!”

This week instead of ending 4th and goal with Things I didn’t know until I was a Dad we are going to start with it: John Lennon once sang in the song HELP! “And now my life has changed in oh so many ways (my independence) seems to vanish in the haze” That was never more true for me than this past Saturday as the Tide was about to kick off vs. the Hogs. Instead of being at the game, or the bar, or watching the game sitting in peace and quiet on the couch I was mashing a banana into a bowl to give it to Jacob. That’s right with the 6:00 PM kickoff it was dinner time at the Brafman’s and I was feeding the kids. At least Shana was nice enough to let us watch TV downstairs in front of the TV so I won’t miss anything. But sometimes the point of having kids is really driven home in weird ways and on Saturday that was one of them. On the flip side having Maya wave her shaker with me after every touchdown and asking me to sing the “Elephant” song again was well worth it.

Let’s start this week with the combo topic of the SEC eating its own over the weekend and what it means for Alabama. We’ll take topic #2 first. As you all know the first round of BCS rankings came out and everyone in Oregon was crying because they got bumped to #3 after FSU. Meanwhile the Tide just rolls along at #1 (random stat the Tide has been ranked #1 more times since 2011 than every other team combined) and while LSU and A&M losing doesn’t really hurt the Tide it doesn’t help it much either from a sexy game stand point. Before FSU went to Clemson and whooped them the best win of the season was our win over A&M. Of course upstart Auburn (and we’ll touch on them shortly) going to College Station and winning ended that argument. If people start coming up to you and crying that the Tide doesn’t play anyone (false) or that they don’t deserve to be ranked #1 (double false) remind them of this. Until a two time defending champ is beaten how can you rank anyone ahead of them? I know it’s a new season I get that but in my opinion if you end the year at #1 you should start the year at #1 until you are knocked off. So with the SEC East being tossed around a little here is what I would like to see happen if for no other reason than to show the country that the Tide is the best. First I am on board the Mizzu train. Let them run the table the rest of the way Beating S. Carolina, going to Ole Miss and ending the year at A&M will not be easy but it will make for a great and sexy (on paper) SEC championship. Second and this is the one that I think we can all agree on. Count me on board for Auburn winning out until the Iron bowl. Sure we both have some tough tests before that game and I am not at all sold on Auburns defense but just imagine for a second this game. Remember a couple of years ago when Michigan and OSU played for the Big Ten title and the winner got to go to the National Title game? Keep this in mind. Not since 1971 (I think) have both teams been ranked in the top 10 and NEVER since it split into the East and West has the Iron Bowl determined who would win the West and go to the SEC Championship which is pretty amazing. Can you imagine the hype of this game? 11-0 2 time defending Champion Alabama rolls into 10-1 Auburn with a shot at the SEC West, the trip to Atlanta and a National title on the line? I think the state might explode, I think Clay Travis and Feinbalm would implode and all of college football would once again come to Alabama. So if both those things happen Alabama would beat at worse two top ten teams and possibly depending on the rest of the country two top 5 teams in back to back weeks. Show me another team that would have to do that…

It boils down to this. If the Tide wins out it will play for the National title. On the flip side if the Tide lose and the rest of the teams win including Ohio State, Baylor and Texas Tech the Tide will not get lucky enough as a one loss team to get back into the running. The SEC just isn’t as good this year.

A couple of quick things on the Arkansas game before we move onto the Vols:

Injuries happen to football teams every year and every game. What a shame that it had to come to Bama last Saturday and to Vinnie S the brain if not the heart of the defense. At least we have Ha-Ha and my new favorite player Landon Collins to lessen the blow. Let’s all hope that Vinnie gets better and is out there again to start the 2014 season.

Not many teams have a guy on special teams that cause a fumble, recover the fumble then later in the game blow the defense out of the water on a 80 yard run that had Coach Saban toss his arms up. Derek Henry is going to be a special player and Saturday showed us why.

We have seen Coach Saban lead us to three national titles, 2 SEC titles and 4 SEC west titles yet I don’t think I’ve ever seen him as excited as he was when Jones made that INT in the 2nd quarter. He was jumping up and down on the sidelines and maybe sort of smiled.

Welcome back Mr. Cooper we’ve missed you

One of my co-workers is engaged to a Vols fan/grad (we can’t all be perfect) anyway last night we were texting and he said something to the effect that he doesn’t think that the Bama defense is “as good as it has been” which might be true until you take a look at the numbers: Now I am saying this now if I were the Vols I would throw the ball 50 times on Saturday. I would throw and throw and throw (which I thought Ole Miss should have done. But once again take a look at these numbers:

With its shutout Saturday, Alabama made it three seasons in a row in which it shut out two SEC foes (the second in 2011 came in the national championship). It was Saban’s 12th overall shutout at Alabama, seven of which have come against SEC opponents.

— Alabama leads the nation with its average of 9.7 points allowed per game. At this point last year, Alabama led the country with an average of 8.27 points allowed per game. In 2011, it was 6.88. Since 2009, the most points per game Alabama allowed after eight weeks of the college football season was 12.5.

— Texas A&M accounted for 42 of the 68 points Alabama has allowed this season. That’s a whopping 61.7 percent.

— Let’s have some fun with numbers and take away the Alabama defense’s best and worst performance. If you do that with scoring defense, Alabama’s average would be 5.2 points allowed per game. Do that with total defense, and it’s 225.4 yards per game.

— The average total offense ranking of the seven teams Alabama has faced this season is 75th. The extremes are Texas A&M (third) and Virginia Tech (110th). The average ranking of its next four (purposely excluding Chattanooga): 45th. The extremes are Auburn (19th) and Tennessee (89th).

— Alabama has allowed an average of 2.54 yards per carry in its last five games. It’s allowed 5.28 yards per pass attempt.

— Alabama has held the opposition below 100 passing yards three times this season. It did that six times in 2011.

Since the Texas A&M game, Alabama has outscored all opponents 201-16.

Take out the Texas A&M game and Bama has beaten the other six teams on its schedule 236-26

That folks is getting it done. Losing Vinnie from a leadership if not a talent stand point is a big loss but the Tide mantra of next man up is true (I think the Bears are saying the same thing about their defense and QB situation at the moment).

The Vols game to me is always my favorite game of the year. Let me start by saying I hate the Vols. When I was in school we never beat them and I can remember clearly Peyton Manning waving that giant T flag at Legion Field after one of the wins while Rocky Top played over and over. While my hated has gotten a little less since Fat Phil and The Wonder Boy Kiffin are gone my enjoyment of kicking the crap out of them hasn’t. And since I am going to the game I look forward to seeing Butch Jones walk off the field with the same shell shocked look on his face that most of the other coaches who have been destroyed by the Tide have. I think our offense is really starting to find it’s a game. Not sure if you guys heard the stat on Saturday but we have run/passed almost exactly the same number of plays since 2011. The splits are unreal. I think that trend continues this week with TJ and K Drake doing their thing and AJ, Coop, Bell and the rest continuing to raise the bar. The Tide has now been favored in an amazing 49 straight games hasn’t lost to an unranked team since the infamous La Monroe game, and has been favored by 20 points or more in 20 times since 2011. I’m not a betting man but I like the Tide to cover the 28 points this weekend and lay the boom to the Vols.

In the be careful of what you wish for department students at Oregon have started selling these shirts on campus: http://www.saturdaydownsouth.com/2013/oregon-students-distribute-we-want-bama-shirts/ . I’ll say this for the Ducks: After watching FSU destroy Clemson I think I’d rather play Oregon.

Last thing on Oregon/FSU/OSU/Baylor etc. How great is this playoff going to be next year? If it was in place today the Tide would open up vs. Ohio State and play the winner of Oregon and FSU. I can’t wait for this to start.

A Few years ago at the game that I went to the Million Dollar Band at Half time did a tribute to Elton John where one of the songs that they played was Elton’s version of The Who song Pinball Wizard. Read that sentence again because I’m still trying to figure out how a marching band playing a song written by one group and sung by another isn’t just the original version of the song plus we are talking about Elton Freakin John not Mumford and Sons. Are you telling me that the powers to be at Bama couldn’t find 4 Elton John songs to play? (can you tell that I am still bugged by this? What does any of this have to do with anything? Because our friends from Columbus and Ohio State know how to do a tribute at half time. Check out the OSU marching band pay tribute to Michael Jackson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=GTca2nrIn4U#t=324

As I write this on Thursday afternoon there is yet another rumor about Coach Saban going to Texas this one has Terry Saban looking for houses in Austin. This is too dumb to even comment on…

Like I mentioned I am going to T-Town this weekend and will report back next week on how the weekend went. So with that in mind here are a couple of songs that get me in the mood for game day: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jQSJBSl9SM0 and a lost classic from the Grateful Dead (who played at Foster Auditorium in the spring of 1977)  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CNtnJrowvZo

If you’re down in T-Town this weekend drop me a line mbrafman@feldinc.com and we’ll toast a Tide Win
