Wish more of you could have made the SEC Holiday party last Sunday, but we did get a good number of toys to donate to Toys for Tots so thank you to Katy for putting this together and to those that came out with a toy!  Stay tuned for more SEC Happy Hours and events in 2014!  Katy is working on putting something together towards the end of January – so stay tuned.  Also, if you are interested in being on the board or volunteering with the Roll Tide Chicago in 2014 please send me an email at

Happy Holidays & Roll Tide!
4th and goal – What offseason?
Happy holidays everyone. Is it me or does this year feel like we are living on Hoth from Star Wars more than Chicago?
Let’s tackle a couple of things right off the bat #1 in case you didn’t hear last Friday Coach Saban finally signed his extension to stay at the Capstone. This was news to almost no one (unless you were a true believer from Texas) let’s hope that this is the final time we have to deal with this but somehow I have a feeling this will be an annual thing until he finally retires. What I found most interesting about this was that at no time publically did he ever say he wanted to leave (in fact it was just the opposite) and yet the story wouldn’t die. The second thing was the timing of the announcement of the extension. It just so happened to happen during the Texas end of the year football banquet. How great is that? According to ESPN while the speakers were up on the stage talking everyone in the room was getting the info on their phones. If that isn’t one of the bigger F You’s of the football season I don’t know what is.
There is a flip side to this story and that is the huge mess that Texas is left with at the moment. We are looking at a Tennessee level mess after Fat Phil was shown the door. What I always find amusing in situations like this is when teams fire coaches and then have no clue who the next coach is going to be. Charlie Strong from Louisville? Gus M from Auburn? Harbough from the Niners? Maybe Darrell Royal? All I know is that it has been a long time and now three coaches ago since Tennessee has been any good and you’d like to think that Texas would learn from them. Before we close the book on Mack and Texas here is a good story on what he meant to a lot of the fans down in Austin:
The moral of this story is that great coaches rarely ever leave on their terms. It should be very interesting to see what happens in a couple of years to Saban, Coach K and Geno Auriemma (the three best college coaches currently coaching.)
In other Bama news if you believe Coach Saban and why won’t you? He was honestly surprised that people asked him about this story:
Does he think we were all born under a rock? I’m sure that he thinks that bringing in everybody’s favorite whipping boy to take a look at the offense is a good idea (I’m sure it is) but how can he honestly look us in the eye and say he was surprised by the reaction? This would be like the Cubs bringing in Barry Bonds to help the hitters and then wondering why people were asking questions. I almost hope he hires Kiffin as a coach just because the circus around the program and his reaction would be priceless.
I always like when athletes graduate from school it makes it a little easier to root for them I find. Check out the list of guys that walked last weekend:
Finally, I know this has been brought up on our Facebook page as it has been rumored for a couple of weeks. Yesterday the Tide accepted DJ Pettway back into the program:
I am not the morality police and as long as he was cleared by the police and the University I have no problem with him coming back to the program. Let’s hope that a year away has straightened him out and the next time we hear his name will it be from the PA announcer announcing a sack. The guy brings a lot to the table and will help the defense big time.
In other news around college/pro football Sports Illustrated has named Peyton Manning as their sportsman of the year. Now as most of you know my thoughts on guys after they leave college in and go to the NFL I don’t really care where they went to college. But next to Cam Newton there was no player in college that I disliked more than Peyton Manning. And while I respect him as a QB and find his commercials funny and his act on SNL was one of the better athlete turns I still have a hard time rooting for him. And I have no clue why he was named Sportsman of the year. Neither does this writer who pretty much names about 10 other athletes that should have won:
Both Texas a&M and LSU are adding seats to their stadiums which I think would bring the number of SEC stadiums that seat over 100,000 people to 4. Who says that people aren’t going to games anymore?
Quick poll question: How many of you are going to be able to travel to 2 bowl games from now on? While we all hate the BCS I think that one aspect of the 4 team playoff that no one is really talking about is the travel it is going to take to get form place to place. This isn’t like the final four where if your team wins on Saturday you stick around until Monday. This is going to be Alabama playing in the Orange Bowl one game and then possibly playing in the Rose Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl next. I know I could never afford to do that. So do you think that fans will hedge their bets and save money by hoping their team wins the semifinal game? I like the rest of you can’t wait for the four team playoff (this year it would have been Iron Bowl II in the semifinals) but the cost is going to be huge.
With this being the last post before Christmas here are two songs that to me showcase the Christmas spirit. The first is my personal favorite song and I guess David Letterman’s as he has had her on his show something like 27 years in a row:
And just because it’s Christmas doesn’t mean us Jews can’t enjoy it as well: (and this is more true than we would care to admit.)
This week in things I didn’t know until I was a Dad: Last Saturday when it snowed and snowed I was stuck inside with Maya and Jacob and since neither wanted to go outside we decided to have a “jammie” day as Maya called it. Now for us that would mean sitting on the couch and watching TV or a movie all day. Relaxing right? Try having a jammie day with two kids. Here is what we did and this was all before 1:00 PM Watched Mickey Mouse on TV, played with Plato, colored, painted, built a puppet stage, built a house out of Lego’s, Jacob took two naps, watched some of Toy Story and Cars and fixed both kids lunch. Where is the lazy in that?
Happy holidays everyone! RTR
