Roll Tide everybody!!!

Tide Trivia: What UA alum, known for his stereotypical Southern drawl, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? Answer: Jim Nabors. He played Gomer Pyle on the Andy Griffith Show and Gomer Pyle \, U.S.M.C.

Well, it’s time for Game 3. Also, it’s our first home game of the season, and lastly, our first SEC rival challenge. I would be lying if I said I didn’t have apprehension. Last year, Ole Miss was the only team to beat AL in regular season. In addition we have a new quarterback, and technically, a brand new team.

What do we really know about Ole Miss? The only two teams they previously played were cupcake teams. This doesn’t tell us much about their “play book”. Add to the fact, they have something to prove. They will be showing up with the expectation of beating AL two games in a row? I’m worried. Truly, I am.

However, I do have faith in Coach, his staff and the team. In the end, when the clock starts running, it comes down to those 11 guys on that field. I’ve been impressed with what I’ve seen thus far but remember the old axiom “games are not won on the field but in the six inches between two ears”. I invite you, and everyone, to come on out and cheer on the best game of the season (thus far). I guarantee it will be a hard fought, and hopefully, a hard won victory for the Tide! RTR!

If you’re planning on watching the game in the Chicagoland area, please join us at either of our two locations. The Houndstooth is located at 3369 N Clark St. Our suburban location, Another Round, is located at 5141 Main Street in Downer’s Grove. The Houndstooth’s web site for further details is www.houndstoothsaloon.com. Another Round’s web site is www.anotherroundbarandgrill.com.

There are no reservations at “The Tooth” and it is based on a “first come, first serve”, so arrive 2 hours prior to kick off to grab a table or it will be standing room only. The game is scheduled to beginning at 8:15 PM CT. Also, there is a Cubs game at home at 12:05 PM CT. There could be some additional “foot traffic”. The alumni association will be there to greet you. As soon as you enter, turn to your immediate right and we’ll be there to greet you as you enter. So, come on down and watch the Tide play at home against Ole Miss.

Another Round will be opened also and ready to great all the wonderful, local AL fans. We have a private area to the far left as you enter the bar. Please wear your crimson and white to cheer on the Tide.

4th and Goal

By Marc Brafman

Before we talk about the big game in T-Town I think it’s time we address something that came up this past weekend. I had a couple of friends in a big group text actually say if Auburn had lost to a cupcake team it would be bad for the SEC. Let’s say it another way: Alabama are fans rooting for Auburn to “beat” a Cupcake team because it would make the SEC look bad? I’m sorry, but there isn’t a big enough score any week vs. anybody where Auburn could lose and I wouldn’t get excited about it! AL.com called the Auburn WIN the most embarrassing game in program history. Can you imagine if they had lost? Guys, I live in the heart of Ohio State fandom. You know I love to knock the “Little” Ten at every turn but had Auburn lost to Jax State this would have made my year. Sometimes the SEC glasses we wear need to come off, and remember if Auburn loses to anybody, we all win. This also goes for the Vols who somehow blew a 17 point lead AT HOME.

Ok, to the matter at hand, this weekend in T-Town. As you aware Ole Miss has scored something like a million points this year playing against teams as UT Martin and Fresno. Now they come to T-Town to battle a “real” defense (or so we all hope). After two games this is what I’ve seen from our defense: No one is going to be able to run the ball better than us, our front 7 is so good and so deep we are going to force teams to beat us in the air, and pre-kick 6 tells us that 9 times out of 10 Bama would lay the boom on teams that only throw. Now I’m honestly not so sure. Yes, the Tide has limited Wis. and Middle Tenn State to only a couple of TD’s but are we so convinced we can stop a GOOD passing team? To me it looks like the same old problems we’ve had in the last couple of years. Not being able to get off the field on 3rd and long, our DB’s continuing not turn around on long passes and etc. And to top it off, I am not at all sold on our QB play. Last year when things were a little off, Simms would make a play with his legs or toss to Coop who would do “Coop things”. This year, while I think the potential is there (I really like Foster on offens and Drake), is it me or does it just look like the Tide is a little off? We will see this Saturday and who doesn’t love an 8:15 CT (9:15 ET) kickoff? With all my doom and gloom I still like the Tide to come through. I am sure none of the guys forgot what Ole Miss did to us last year. I’d like to see the Tide run the ball more than they did against MTSU to eat clock time and keep the Rebs off the field.  So by 1:00 AM EST the final score will be Tide 28-Ole Miss 17.

Is anyone else amazed with all the great players Coach hasn’t recruited a single good kicker has not come to T-town? How is that even possible?

Texas fired their AD yesterday which of course means Charlie Strong, who just got to Austin, is on the hot seat (again). I’m sure if they fire him at season’s end, which would be foolish, Saban will be named again as their #1 coach. Don’t believe it. I can’t see him going to a school who’s fan base is even crazier than ours. Plus he is older. And I don’t think he wants to start over again.

What is it about religious based schools so far this year? BYU is winning back to back games on their “hail Mary’s” (even while their starting QB was out), and last week, Notre Dame beat UVA in the final seconds with their backup quarterback. If only Brandies had a football team I’d be in good shape.

During this week’s game my only interest will be on long standing college football rivalries. The University of Cincinnati and Miami of Ohio are not on the top of any body’s list but get this, Saturday afternoon will be the 120th time these schools have met. 120 games is amazing to me.

For this week’s song a little different twist on the classic Tom Petty song Rebels:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8E_LlwlCIiw
